Abstract
In the first year of the research we developed a system for data recording and editing based on logical checks. A total of 161,083 records from six herds were analyzed. Logical checks included birthdate within the correct time frame with respect to the dam’s age, weight with respect to age, and parity with respect to age of the cow calving. A large number of birthdates were incorrect, but there were significant differences between herds with respect to the frequency of mistakes. Some of the mistakes were due to transfer of the data from the data from the “Noa” herd management program to the ICBA central data bank. In the second year 114,487 records from four herds were analyzed after improvement of the algorithm for data transfer. However, 5.4% of the calving records and 2.4% of the calf weight records were still outside the possible range. Thus significant improvement in record collection and transfer is required before it will be possible to compute genetic evaluations. We were therefore unable to achieve the main goal of the research, computation of genetic evaluations for growth rate in the Israeli beef cattle population.
